Selous Game Reserve

Tanzania SelousThe worlds largest game reserve is just under 55 000sq km. Situated in the southern part of Tanzania, and named after Frederick Courtney Selous, the famous hunter and naturalist who was killed and buried there in the First World War. It is uninhabited and divided into approximately 45 hunting blocks. The vegetation varies from miombo woodland, rivers and thickets to more rough mountainous terrain in the southern areas. The reserve has a number of large rivers; Ruaha, Rufiji and Kilombero running through it. The buffalo populations are fantastic, as well as lion, leopard, elephant, hippo, crocodile and a wide range of plainsgame. Great general bag area offering some of the finest hunting in Africa.

Western Areas

The Kigozi and Rungwa, as well as the Moyowosi and Ugalla Game Reserves all lie in the western part of the country. These areas all have excellent populations of lion, leopard, buffalo, eland, sable, bohor-reedbuck as well as  Topi and Roan antelope, with some of the areas holding the elusive sitatunga, all these are species unique to western Tanzania. Vegetation varies from miombo woodland and open grassland, to swamp and wetlands in some of the reserves. These are great areas for the avid cat hunter, or someone looking for western species to add to their trophy room.

Masailand

Situated in the northern part of the country, the areas are mainly open savannah plains, with acacia thorn thickets, and rocky outcrops. These areas are mainly dry, with a unique two seasons of rain falling, early rains in November, and then the main rains in January-March. Excellent lion, leopard, the famed 'big buffalo' of masailand. Also Unique to these areas are the gerenuk, lesser-kudu, grants and thompsons gazelle's, fringe-eared oryx, dik-dik and whitebearded wildebeast to name but a few. For the serious hunter, these areas offer unparalled hunting opportunities for the big cats and buffalo, and the more rarer species unique to this arid region.
